Anyone of any social status, academic level, age, height, weight, you name it has the possibility of being a victim of domestic violence. However, there are certain risk factors that increases the likelihood of becoming a victim. In bad neighborhoods, they may feel socially ostracized if there is tension in the area and a lack of community. This can also be a consequence of victimization because the offender may separate himself and the victim from all contact from family, friends, etc. When the victim needs love and support, they will not know where to go. Isolation can be a precursor to abuse as well. For example, when the victim was younger and in a public school system, they may have been isolated and not had very many friends. This†¦show more content†¦This may also be a consequence because the victim may feel as if they could not have a healthy, â€Å"normal† relationship without the presence of promiscuity or delinquent behavior, such as doing drugs. The offender and future suitors may pressure the victim to do things that end up victimizing the individual again. Of course, having a history of prior sexual or any other type of physical and psychological abuse is a risk factor and a consequence. The victim will have grown up thinking that abuse is the only way to resolve conflict and will not be able to comprehend any other way of resolution to these problems. This can also lead to mental health problems which makes the victim even more vulnerable to future victimization. This is also a consequence in that once the victim comes out of a bad relationship, their view on conflict resolution will lead them back into another bad relationship. Traditional gender roles are also a risk factor for victimization. The victim views the man of the relationship as the power-holding and dominant partner of the relationship and the women is meant to cater to his every need. While this is a common view, how it becomes a risk factor is when this view is twisted and the victim sees abuse as the male proving his dominance over the woman. Reflection: More than just looking in the mirror Â…reflection in a mirror is an exact replica of what is in front of it. Reflection in professional practiceÂ… gives back not what it is, but what might be, an improvement on the originalÂ… Biggs (1999). Reflective practice, in this context, is not about just looking at myself in a mirror and accepting what I see blindly, without any question or evaluation. Rather, it is about looking at what I have learned and how I can utilise that learning in my teaching practice.
